Hauraki Gulf Cruising with Dee and Mike with Dee and Mike

Mike and Dee are true locals; having had a long association with the sea and the Hauraki Gulf in particular they are a great team together.

Book this Locals and Landscapes Experience

Let us introduce you to Dee & Mike your Locals & Landscapes Guides for The Hauraki Gulf

Mike and Dee are true locals; having had a long association with the sea and the Hauraki Gulf in particular they are a great team together.

Mike is a professional skipper of 50 years experience at sea, whilst Dee who apart from her extensive boating knowledge is also an experienced conservation guide and an expert in coastal flora and fauna. With her enthusiasm for the natural environment Dee has the ability to ‘bring alive’ a trip in the dinghy around the rocks, or a coastal walk on one of Auckland’s beautiful inner Gulf islands. Dee is also a Conservation registered guide.

The 3rd part of the Locals and Landscapes team is our NZ flagship “Te Ngakau a Kupe” – a 60’ luxury private catamaran Yacht. Known affectionately as Kupe (pronounced “Koo pay”), she will be your private floating lodge and restaurant for your Hauraki Gulf tour. (Dee is also an accomplished cook!)

Mike and Dee are also keen writers with wide interests. They contribute to New Zealand Boating, Professional Skipper, Memories, Organic NZ, Pacific Yachting and Forest & Bird Magazines. They have also published several books - In 2001 Dee published Saltwater in Her Hair and in 2004 Mike and Dee published Boating Fun.

The follow up book for young adults Boating For All was published in October 2007.

Trip Highlights

  • Exclusive Private Charter aboard our 60ft Luxury Catamaran.
  • Overnight Cabin Accommodation with Private En-suite in a secluded bay of Motuithe Island where you will have time to go ashore and explore or we can arrange for you to plant a tree to help with the restoration of the natural habitat to the island.
  • Four Course Gourmet meal prepared by Dee and accompanied with fine wines.
  • Full Fishing and Diving Facilities are available onboard and included in your Eco Cruise and overnight experience.
  • Visit to Tiritiri Matantangi with Private Guided Tour of this unique island where all mammal predators have been removed to allow rare and endangered species to thrive, Dee is a DOC Registered Guide and has gained special permission to do private tours for Locals and Landscapes. Also included in your overnight experience is a donation to Tiritiri Matangi to help The Supporters of Tiritiri Matangi in their continued conservation efforts on this island.

Hauraki Gulf Cruising with Dee & Mike 1 to 4 days

Day One - Discover the Hauraki Gulf - Depart Viaduct 3.30 / 4.00 pm with drinks and canapés as we head out of Auckland Harbour and towards the Hauraki Gulf. You will learn the history of the islands you past and their importance whilst taking in the many stunning vistas. Perhaps try a spot of fishing before we arrive at Motuihe Island or safe anchor point for the evening. You may want to explore this beautiful and Natural Island using the on board kayaks, or the dinghy and the kids can go ski-biscuiting. Later, Enjoy a fourcourse gourmet meal and watch the sun set over Auckland City as you relax on the back deck. Following dinner, enjoy a DVD or simply surrender to Kupe’s comfortable cabins. Many guests claim to have had their best sleeps ever on board Kupe, and even diehard early risers are often not seen until mid morning!

Day Two – Tiritiri Matangi

Your luxurious adventure begins again when you awake, with a beautiful breakfast in the sun. After breakfast we set sail for Tiritiri Matangi where Dee will escort you on a private walking tour of the island. We aim to arrive early so that you can enjoy Tiritiri Matangi without other visitors on the daily ferry, however this is dependant on weather and sea conditions. Here you will see here some of New Zealand’s most rare and endangered bird species that are not found anywhere else in NZ. As one of the many volunteers who have planted thousands of trees to reforest the island, Dee has been guiding here at Tiritiri Matangi for 20 years. She can give you a special insight to the flora and fauna of the island as well as the Maori history. Even for non “bird watchers” amongst you, this becomes a fascinating and enlightening experience.

All our guests aboard Kupe help with the continued conservation effort Tiritiri Matangi as we donate $250.00 for each visit that Kupe and our guests make to Tiritiri Matangi. On your return to Kupe a beautiful lunch is prepared before we set sail for our return to Auckland, on route a spot of fishing can bring an added excitement to your day arriving back at Auckland Viaduct around 3.00pm.
Please note: Your day with Dee & Mike is completely at the discretion of Mother Nature. Safety always comes first. Winds or sea conditions may require a different trip than described above.
