Eastland Regional Information
Eastland - also known as the East Cape - is one of those 'off the beaten track' destinations that often gets missed during a visit to New Zealand. Those who take the time to explore the East Cape are bountifully rewarded.
This is a region of great history. Legend has it that this is where the first Polynesian canoes landed and where Captain Cook first set foot on New Zealand soil.
From Opotiki to Hicks Bay is a beautiful drive with small bays, beautiful empty beaches and little villages. From Hick's Bay the road turns inland for a while passing many Marae (maori meeting houses), the film location from Whale Rider, the 660 metre long Tolga Bay wharf and finally the chardonnay city of Gisborne.
Gisborne is the first city in the world to see the dawn of each new day. They also create some of the country's best chardonnay wine in order to have some libation to celebrate that fact!
