The Tongariro National Park was gifted by the Ngati Tuwharetoa Iwi (tribe) to the country allowing everyone to enjoy the unforgettable trails, including the famous Tongariro Crossing. The Tongariro Crossing is considered the best one day hike in the country and a must for all avid trampers.
In winter the park offers great skiing opportunities making this region is a true year round play ground.
