Southland Regional Information
The Southland region is made up of the country's most southern city, an island that is a national park and the wild Catlins Coast.
Invercargill is the country's most southern city which is built around a park. It hasn't yet developed its tourism niche yet.
The country's "third island" has recently been declared a National Park. Stewart Island has less than 10kms of paved roads and accommodation choices are limited but the wildlife experience available is unlimited! During the day a visit to Ulva Island to the bird sanctuary is amazing and at night it may be possible to see our national bird, the Kiwi (or even during the day sometimes). Enjoy the empty hiking trails and kayak the pristine waters.
Northeast of Invercargill, is the wild and rugged Catlins. Again wildlife abounds with opportunity to see yellow-eyed penguins, sea lions, fur seals, elephant seals, Hector Dolphins (the smallest and rearest dolphins) and many species of forest and sea birds. There is a fossilized forest, waterfalls, hiking trails and a picture perfect lighthouse at Kaka Point. One of our favourite off the beaten track destinations.
