Taranaki Regional Information
A great example of an 'off the beaten track' location that offers many rewards for those who make the journey. Take the 'forgotten world highway' to Taranaki, with the perfectly shaped, snow capped cone Mount Taranaki, pointing the way.
There is much to do in this remote region. Tramping on Mount Taranaki (also known as Mt. Egmont) is a must for any avid tramper, with over 300 km of trails to choose from.
Those interested in art would probably be suprised to learn that there are more artists per capita in Tarankai than any other place in New Zealand. The region is home to the best contemporary public art gallery in the Southern Hemisphere.
Avid gardeners would be disappointed if they left New Zealand without visiting Pukeiti Garden with its 360 hectares of gardens boasting over 10,000 rhododendrons.
The movie The Last Samurai with Tom Cruise was filmed here, allowing the region to recieve some long overdue international recognition for its national beauty.
