Lake Taupo Regional Information
Lake Taupo is the country's largest lake. It is the result of the most violent volcanic eruption the world has seen in the past 5000 years - the ash changed the colour of sunsets as far away as Europe and China.
Today it is a calm and serene place where life is dominated by year round fishing, sailing and skiing.
Rainbow and brown trout abound in the lake and its many rivers. Watersports like sailing and kayaking are also popular.
The small lakeside town offers a varitey of restaurants and good shopping along with one of the best wine shops in the country.
With such a great lake also comes a great waterfall. The Waikato River has carved a gorge through the rock creating a massive funnel of water which gushes in great force before plummeting over the falls. A must see/feel for anyone visiting the region.
Lake Taupo is one hour from Rotorua, two hours from Waitomo, one and half hours from Tongariro National Park and two hours to Napier which makes a great central base to explore other regions.
